Shifa Foundation |
Shifa Foundation was established as
a non-profit organization in 1991 to provide health services to poor and needy Pakistanis.
Its directors and others concerned have been volunteering free services, home visiting
and other health care facilities since 1992.
In 1998, the Shifa Foundation started its first separate project as Shifa College
of Medicine and now over 150 students have been enrolled.
The Shifa Falehee Clinic has been established on Shifa International Hospital premises.
The outpatient arm of the clinic started functioning on February 8, 2001. That this
kind of facility was long overdue is attested by the fact that about 25 patients
a day started visiting the clinic within a fortnight of its inauguration. Now the
clinic caters to approximately 100 patients a day.
The Falahee outpatient clinic’s operational expenses are Rs. 500,000 per month.
Seventy beds for the Falahee inpatient facility cost approximately Rs. 7,500,000,
and the cost of treating eligible inpatient poor is over Rs. 2,500,000 per month.
To this day the capital costs incurred have been met through generous contributions.

Shifa College of Medicine |
The Shifa School of Medicine is a new
institution established in Islamabad, Pakistan for training Pakistanis and students
from the U.S. and Canada in the health care fields. The medical school is affiliated
with Bahria University.
The first year MBBS class commenced in January, 2003. High school graduates who
meet the qualifications (coursework, SAT scores, etc.) are eligible for admission.
Instruction is provided in English. Students from abroad can benefit from a high-quality
hands-on education at a fraction of the cost needed for a similar education in North
America. For example, the annual tuition is USD $10,000/yr., and room & board
is approx.USD $1600/yr.
Saba Aslam Trust is proud to support the Shifa School of Medicine. The establishment
of the medical college and similar institutions of higher learning will contribute
to the growth of the educated segment of society, who will be in a better intellectual
and economic position to advance the development of Pakistan as a whole.

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer
Hospital |
This hospital and research center,
founded by Imran Khan and other concerned Pakistanis, is located in Lahore. The
facility serves over 3,000 in-patients and 48,000 out-patients annually, with over
12,000 chemotherapy regimens, 24,000 radiation treatments and 1,900 surgical procedures
performed. Other services such as plastic, reconstructive surgery help patients
maintain or regain a sense of normality after traumatic procedures.
Over 75% of patients receive cancer care free or based on partial financial support from Zakat and donations. The hospital is a world-class institution with partnerships
and collaborative research projects with other institutes, such as the German National
Cancer Center in Heidelberg. Education programs continue under the umbrella of the
College Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP). A new nursing administration and training program provides advanced post-graduate training.
Saba Aslam Trust recognizes the importance of the Shaukat Khanum Hospital, especially
in light of the large number of cancer cases in the country and the limited cancer
care facilities available to the public. Saba Trust supports the institution and
encourages others to do likewise.

Ambulances |
There is a great need for ambulances
in Pakistan. Currently, they are very few properly equipped emergency vehicles to
service the needs of the people, especially in suburbs and rural areas. Many people
who could otherwise be saved die because of no access to an ambulance. This situation
is compounded by the lack of roads and telephone service in certain areas. Moreover,
the quality of emergency medical attention in rural areas and the bandaging, stitching
and wound care materials available to rural doctors is limited.
Fortunately, Saba Aslam Trust has arranged for three ambulances to be donated for
use in Pakistan. The emergency vehicles are being donated graciously by the Church
of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints in the United States as a gesture of goodwill
to humanity. These ambulances are fully equipped with up-to-date life-support mechanisms
and emergency supplies.
Through its relationships with other organizations in the U.S. and Pakistan, Saba
Aslam Trust facilitates such important contributions and sharing of resources for
the benefit of Pakistanis who have no other recourse. In time, with better health
care services and other efforts such as education, it is hoped that Pakistan will
be transformed into a highly developed and prosperous nation.
